CHAPTER FIFTEEN
HUGH
âMove in with me.â
Blinking at Simoneâs outburst, I stare at him across the dining table. Itâs been four days since I started to remember. Things are still broken into pieces, but I know much more than I did before. With the memories comes a sense of confidence I never had before.
Weâd spent the day exploring his island, walking along the golden sand of the beach, and exploring the sea caves riddled in the cliffs. Heâd even shown me an ancient shrine to a forgotten Greek God, the carvings on the stone altar eroded over time. A chunk of raw honeycomb and four reddish-brown feathers had been left by someone on his staff as an offering.
âWhat did you just say?â I question, not sure Iâve heard him correctly.
âMove in with me,â Simone repeats, laying his fork down beside his plate of half-eaten moussaka. âI know you live in England, but I want you with me in my house in Rome. In my bed. I have business waiting that I canât leave any longer, and weâre going to have to return to Italy tomorrow.â
Flustered, I pick up my glass of wine, bringing it to my lips for a quick sip before replying, âMy whole life is in London. I meanâ¦moving in together is a big step.â
Simoneâs smile contains a hint of irony. âConsidering weâve been through hundreds of lifetimes together, it isnât really. I know you feel the connection between us. Trust me, you wonât be able to stay away from me, and Iâd rather not have to chase you all around Europe.â
âBut I barely know anything about you⦠this time around,â I add hastily.
âI live in Rome when Iâm not staying here on the Island. Iâm rich. Iâve run my familyâs business since I was twenty-five when my father died. I have no other siblings. My mother died in childbirth. I have an uncle, an aunt, and a whole herd of cousins.â Reaching for my hand when I lower my glass to the table, he gives my fingers a gentle loving squeeze. âYou know me⦠who I am inside, just as I know you soul deep too. Anything else doesnât really matter.â
Meeting his steady gaze, I canât help but have doubts. âIs there something youâre not telling me?â
âNo, amore mio. I just want to spend what time we have together.â
âWhy did you leave me⦠before when I was eighteen?â
âReleasing my hand, he sits back in his chair, watching me somberly. âI was still mourning your loss from the other lifetime. Our time together is always fleeting. A handful of moments, no more and it can be crushing, devastating. I treated you badly when you were eighteen because I was punishing you for dying. You were so young and had no idea about the true nature of our relationship or my pain. In the end, I felt guilty for what I had done, and I decided I wanted you to experience more of life before I changed everything you knew about yourself.
