CHAPTER FIFTEEN

HUGH

“Move in with me.”

Blinking at Simone’s outburst, I stare at him across the dining table. It’s been four days since I started to remember. Things are still broken into pieces, but I know much more than I did before. With the memories comes a sense of confidence I never had before.

We’d spent the day exploring his island, walking along the golden sand of the beach, and exploring the sea caves riddled in the cliffs. He’d even shown me an ancient shrine to a forgotten Greek God, the carvings on the stone altar eroded over time. A chunk of raw honeycomb and four reddish-brown feathers had been left by someone on his staff as an offering.

“What did you just say?” I question, not sure I’ve heard him correctly.

“Move in with me,” Simone repeats, laying his fork down beside his plate of half-eaten moussaka. “I know you live in England, but I want you with me in my house in Rome. In my bed. I have business waiting that I can’t leave any longer, and we’re going to have to return to Italy tomorrow.”

Flustered, I pick up my glass of wine, bringing it to my lips for a quick sip before replying, “My whole life is in London. I mean…moving in together is a big step.”

Simone’s smile contains a hint of irony. “Considering we’ve been through hundreds of lifetimes together, it isn’t really. I know you feel the connection between us. Trust me, you won’t be able to stay away from me, and I’d rather not have to chase you all around Europe.”

“But I barely know anything about you… this time around,” I add hastily.

“I live in Rome when I’m not staying here on the Island. I’m rich. I’ve run my family’s business since I was twenty-five when my father died. I have no other siblings. My mother died in childbirth. I have an uncle, an aunt, and a whole herd of cousins.” Reaching for my hand when I lower my glass to the table, he gives my fingers a gentle loving squeeze. “You know me… who I am inside, just as I know you soul deep too. Anything else doesn’t really matter.”

Meeting his steady gaze, I can’t help but have doubts. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

“No, amore mio. I just want to spend what time we have together.”

“Why did you leave me… before when I was eighteen?”

“Releasing my hand, he sits back in his chair, watching me somberly. “I was still mourning your loss from the other lifetime. Our time together is always fleeting. A handful of moments, no more and it can be crushing, devastating. I treated you badly when you were eighteen because I was punishing you for dying. You were so young and had no idea about the true nature of our relationship or my pain. In the end, I felt guilty for what I had done, and I decided I wanted you to experience more of life before I changed everything you knew about yourself.
